Ubuntu for our kids' school(s)

Our kids are going to a school in a province where the education and charities had their budgets cut by $77 Million. I did a quick demo to the principal, with my eldest's help (grade 2) and he's convinced. The problem is convincing the school board and the IT guys, and you know how those types are. If it isn't from M$ it isn't any good. The school is about to toss a pallet loaded with PCs and iMacs because they are "too old." They could just a easily recycle them into Ubuntu and save $$$$$$ and give those computers several more years before they have to be changed over. I could use all the resources I can get to do a presentation or proposal to the school board. Can you gurus help? Reply over at my comic blog - yes, I've got it up and running again.

House hunting...

I emailed a two bedroom place on a whim. Maybe, just maybe, they would rent to us.

Nope. "5 people in a two bedroom is too much."

Uh. yah, if that was 5 adults. But this is a family looking for anything.

Ah well. I hope they find the renters they want. Me, I'm off house hunting.

Yah, it does.

Especially when I can't make daily trips out to where I would be house hunting.

*sigh*

ah well. This must be done and I will do it.

What is the biggest bit of chaos that could happen?

Any ideas?

How about Hims getting a job offer two hours away that will require us to move?

Either I can stay here for the remaining months of school so that DS doesn't get pulled or I can pull him and move us all.

Either way, I get to start packing. Today.

And then there's the 29th. Omg! I'm trying to find him a place to live. I have to deal with bills, and licensens, and the dress, and more. And to top it off, we're not cancelling the wedding.

So, single parent, move into a two bedroom or what?

stress? oh just a bit.
19 days and counting

To what you might ask...?

On February 29th, Hims is going to make me an honest woman.

We told one of our gfs that we were planning on eloping because our budget was so small and she turned to me and said "You're not eloping on MY watch."

Two days later, we told her mother that we really can't afford a reception or anything and that we're going to have to elope. "You're not eloping on MY watch."

So we handed them the budget. 200$ for the license and marriage commisionaire, 200$ for "everything else." There's another 200-250 for my dress, shoes, etc, that they can't touch cause those are MY decisions. I picked up a set of sandals today that don't make me feel like I'm going to break my ankle. I also grabbed a set of white shoes for DD. D2 doesn't have anything yet to wear, so she might have to wear mocasins. I have 20$ on my dress (it'll cost 111.00 when its paid for).

My dad says he'll try to send money - not holding my breathe.

His dad is too sick to come and can't contribute.

And as soon as our last T-4 comes in, we'll file for income tax. That'll give us enough money to do a quick run to the Island so that we can see his father.

Yup, pauper's budget. We're doing pot luck reception if we're going to have any at all. Erg... there's another 50$ for drinks. And no, there won't be any alcohol at the reception - we can't afford it. There will be enough wine for us to do the "stomp the glass" part of the ceremony, but that's it.

Anyone want to lay odds on whether or not I faint?

Pray for me... please!

Don't you know when to give up?

The kids are sick.

Hims is sick.

I'm sick.

So what do I hear today? A faint knock on my door. I ignore it. DS comes out of the bathroom and announces to all "Mommy, there's someone knocking on the door!" They nock two more times before I can get there.

I open the door. I'm not wearing a bra, but am wearing a tshirt. I'm wearing my sleeping shorts over my underwear. If its a friend, I'll still tell them to get lost.

Its not.

Two ladies and a child. Proselytizing. "We would like to invite you to our church tomorrow for..."

"We've got fifths disease here. We're contagious."

"That doesn't matter. Please come."

Doesn't matter? Uh. right. Let's just infect the entire church!

"No, I don't think so." I try to close the door and she stuffs a double business card sized flyer in my face. "Don't you get it? We're sick here and you don't want to be around us. We'll infect you all."

And I slam the door.

I wonder if they stuck that stupid card in our mailbox. :P I swear once you become christian, your iq drops 20 points.

I have a problem....

The kids were exposed to Fifth's disease about a week ago. Everyone here is running high fevers, ear infections and more.

My problem?

Do I give them acetominophen to make them feel better and be normal kids again or just let them be sick? This is the first time that our son has just curled up into a ball ever. Not even pneumonia and being nebulized in the hospital got him down years ago. All three of them have been sleeping for hours.

If we weren't so sick ourselves, this would almost be peaceful!

Merry Effing Christmas

We're low on cash this month okay, no big deal. I'm on disability and his job covers what my disability can't or won't. All our bills have finally been caught up on and we were finally able to breathe for the first time in months even though we can't really overspend this Christmas. We qualified for a hamper so that got us a turkey voucher, some food, and presents for the kids and even a few for us. I spent what little extra we had this month and got some real luxuries - stockings, stocking stuffers and some extra presents for the kids. We got the Wii over two months ago after saving up for it for several months and a friend of ours bought us a kewl game for it that we are all enjoying, so that at least is making us happy. So what if our kids won't be getting the "moundful" of gifts under the tree, the hamper Santas have filled some of their wishes. DS will be getting his wish of a remote controlled car - actually two of them (aie...batteries!). DD is getting a kidz digicam thanks to the hamper.

But... god damn it... I shouldn't have bought the presents for the kids out of our money. I should have saved it.

Why?

Because Penalt's father is lying in the ICU in critical condition.

(posted elsewhere)
My father in law, E, is a 70 year old man who has been fighting heart failure for over a decade and has diabetes as well as other major medical problems, was supposed to have been seen by the cardiology department at (major hospital) on Friday the 14th of December. He drove from his home to (major city), a drive of at least 3 hours one way, to an appointment that was supposed to have happened there. Instead of being seen and having his defibrillating pacemaker fine tuned, he was told that the Cardiologists were "too busy," "unavailable" and to go home. They did not even have the decency to call him to tell him to stay home and not make the trip.

So, not one to argue with the doctors, he turned around and drove the 3 hours home.

Ten minutes after arriving at home, while his wife was in another room, he awoke to find himself in the debris field of his kitchen table. He had just had the first of at least 6 heart attacks. The only thing that kept him from dying before the ambulance arrived was the defibrillating pacemaker.

E has since been told that he is going to be moved to (major hospital) "as soon as a bed is available." His personal cardiologist is not impressed with the (major hospital) Cardiac Unit. That was Friday. Yesterday, 3pm, my husband called up and E still had not been moved because there is no bed. (major hospital) should be thankful that I'm not within spitting distance and we can't afford to travel, because this is just unacceptable. If the (major hospital) Cardiac Unit had seen him on Friday, maybe the heart attacks and all this chaos could have been avoided.

My children are about to loose their only decent grandparent left on the west coast. My hunny, Penalt, and his brothers and sister are about to become orphans because of snafu that (major hospital)'s Cardiac Unit pulled on E. Ca, E's second wife, is about to become a widow. All eight of E's grandchildren, the youngest has never met him, are about to loose their grandfather. E will never be able to drive again if by some miracle he does get discharged. The best thing we can hope for is that he is able to leave the hospital to go to a nursing home. He will be simply too ill to go to his home of 35 years.

None of this would have happened if the (major hospital)'s Cardiac Unit had not bumped him because they were "too busy." If they had kept him there until a cardiologist was available, then they might have caught the heart attacks before they started. E is stable unless he tries to do anything more than sitting up. It is a waiting game now. We're all waiting for the other shoe to drop.
(end post)

E was talking to him today and yes, there is a spot in the same major city, but at another hospital. Apparently someone complained bitterly about what happened and they are making a bed available. (gee... the letters I wrote to the media maybe?) E is so sick that he can't wash his face or brush his own hair. He talked to Penalt today about turning off the defibralator part of his pacemaker. Penalt and I are just stunned and more. We know he's suffering and E has every right to choose to end his pain, especially since there is pretty much no hope to ever recover.

Neither of us are taking this well. He isn't sleeping. I'm recovering from the stomach flu and just have no desire to clean, cook or really do anything but I know I have to because the kids need me. I don't even want to look at the presents I've got to wrap.

We can't afford to take the trip by ferry to go see E. I've threatened to send Penalt by bus if I had to - we have just enough for that. He deserves to see his father once last time. We're praying that E lasts long enough for our income tax return to come in so that we can go see him. He hasn't met the baby.

Merry fucking Christmas to us. We have to fake it for the kids and neither of us have the energy to do it. Penalt normally does a 5 course oh my god meal, but this year, we'll be lucky if we have the energy to stick a butterball in the oven let alone make a meal. If the worst happens, at least I have the Wii that I could pawn if I needed to. We're hoping and praying it won't.

Merry fucking Christmas.
Weird eyes

I've been told that Baby's eyes will eventually solidify into one colour. It has been a year since they first started to "change" and they haven't. I managed to snap the below while she was nursing...

She's got colourful eyes.
3 sickos

9 days ago, DP took DS into the hospital here to check out his cough. An xray was taken. He was sent home with "a cold and aggravated asthma."

Four days ago, our family doctor's office called. It wasn't "a cold." He had pneumonia.

I flipped out. DS had spent that last week in school and he was on his way home via the bus.

I was livid. I quickly made a few phone calls and let the schools know about it and that he wasn't going to be going back the next day. He got antibiotics from the local clinic that night.

That was Thursday.

On Friday, little Miss Muffet was coughing in her sleep. So I took her in. The doc condescended to me because she wasn't coughing. I did my glare and said "The hospital MISSED pneumonia in her brother. She's got a weird cough." He did an xray reluctantly and then came back to me sheepishly.

"If I hadn't seen it for myself, I would not have believed it. She has a loonie size problem in her right lung." He diagnosed her with bronchitis and I asked if I should send the middle one in to be checked. He said yes.

So she came in. I took DS and wandered around the drug store and then back home and waited for the call to come and get them.

The same doctor saw her. She didn't have anything on exam and he wasn't about to force her to have an xray. He prescribed her prophylactic antibiotics because she too had the same cough the wobbler has.

DP then told me that he had to talk to me.

DD has a heart murmur.

Suddenly, a lot of how she acts makes sense. She likes to curl up and watch tv. She's got bursts of activity, but no where near what DS has. I leaves me very worried about her too. Is this a long term problem she's had? Or is it just fever related?

Worried? Hell ya.

Catching up 3

Argh!!

The boy is at school.

The man is away at a job interview.

The preschooler is keeping the baby entertained - mud, of course.

So why don't I want to do any chores?

Cause I want to play with my fibre! I want to pet my yarns and name them george. I want to twirl my spindle and make it do magic, turning seemingly random llama hair into yarn. And then set it. And then knit it into something for me. Maybe even dye it too.

Cause I hate chores. Hate them hate them hate them.

But I've got to do them. Cause if I don't, no one will.

Catching up...

These should have been posted yesterday... Computer blurp.

If I get a set of golf clubs, honey, you can have anything you want

That's how the conversation started.

"No. Wait. I want an Xbox 360 with Guitar Hero." He starts demonstrating how it works and all the funky things it does doing air guitar and how he would be able to vegitate in front of the tv with it. I'm not amused.

"Fine, you can have it, but I want to see this place sterile and I don't want to have to do it."

"I know you want a Wii. I want to see this place sterile and I don't want to have to do it."

*blink*blink*blink*

"Wait... If you want a spinning wheel, I want to see this place sterile and I don't want to have to do it."

Dammit. He has me there. Frag frag frag frag.

A cleaning I will go...
Heartbreak

I was going to post this on an email list I'm on, but on the day I was going to write it, someone posted about their pet dying. I didn't think my agony was as bad as theirs.

So I'm posting it here.

Back at Crown last weekend, I went into the tent and grabbed my spinning supplies. I was going to hang at camp and spin for a while to let the baby sleep and have some down time with the kids. That's when I saw it. The other half had forced the kids to stay in the tent for a while earlier in the day for punishment for taking off on us without their waivers or something. Little did I realize how much I was going to be punished instead.

There, in my basket, was the remains of my spindle.

Yes, my spindle was destroyed. Turned into kindling by the children. I pulled it out, found hims and show him. I don't know why tears weren't cascading down my face. I was devastated. The event was barely tolerable as it was because of the heat, but I still had my spindle and my roving to play with, until I found it in pieces.

I wandered up and down merchants row hoping someone would be able to fix it or something. I found Lynn the Weaver and he and I came to an agreement and I had a loaner spindle to play with. But it wasn't my spindle. It didn't spin like mine. It didn't feel like mine.

So, after a second trip down Merchants, I had returned the spindle and was still carrying my broken one when I saw a vision of beauty and light.

There she was, my baroness. She turned to me and I fell to my knees. She was an angel sent from heaven and she promised me that my spindle would be fixed. My baron is a woodworker and does wonderful bits of magic with wood.

The rest of the event went like a lot of events go. Some boring. Some fun. But a huge shock was lifted when my Barons took my spindle and promised to fix it. I got an email from him yesterday and he said that "we're all one big family."

And you know what, he's right.

Knitting questionaire

Stolen from another knitter - mostly for one of the "secret exchanges."

1. a.What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with?
I love alpaca. Some cottons. It has to feel soft in my hands.
I like trying the new fancy mixtures like bamboo and soysilk.

b. What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?
Sheep's wool. Mohair. Both of which I'm allergic too.

2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?
Trust me, you don't want to know.

3. a. How long have you been knitting & how did you learn?
I "learned" as a teenager. I didn't really know how to knit till my late 20's.

b. Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?
Intermediate. I can teach beginners, but I'm not that good with more advanced stuff. I knit "backwards." My front loops are in the same place as everyone's back loops.

4. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?
Nope.

5. What's your favorite scent?
Lavender, Lilac and Rose. Not all at once.

6. Do you have a sweet tooth? Favorite candy?
Chocolate.

7. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do? Do you spin?
I spin, crochet, sew, cross stitch, miniature origami, play medievally and more.

8. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD)
I have eclectic tastes. What I don't like, my hunny might.

9. a. What's your favorite color(s)?
Used to be black, blues, red, and silver as a teenager. Now there's tons of purple and violet in the mix.

b. Any colors you just can't stand?
Green.
Barney purple.

10. a. What is your family situation?
Hubby, Wifey, Soney, Daughtery, Baby.

b. Do you have any pets?
I think fish are more ornamentation than pets.

11. Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos?
No real need for mittens - I chew the fingertips off. Hats maybe. Scarves, maybe. Ponchos - only if they are long enough in front. I love shawls though.

12. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?
Baby hats. Shawls. Quicky one ball scarves.

13. What are you knitting right now?
I'm not. I'm typing. ;)

14. Do you like to receive handmade gifts?
Yup.

15. a. Do you prefer straight or circular needles?
depends on the project. Sometimes I'll move them from one set to another until I get the right "feel" when knitting.

b. Bamboo, aluminum, plastic?
Bamboo, Brittany, and some plastic.

16. Do you own a yarn winder and/or swift?
I call them "knees" and "hubby's hands."

17. How old is your oldest UFO?
I recycle my ufos after a certain period of time. I have one that is a year and a half old and its sitting in my brain in the "do I want to work on it or should I recycle it and waste all that energy" bin. We'll see if it lasts.

18. What is your favorite holiday?
Canada Day. Cause I'm proud to be Canadian.
Least favorite is the Fourth of July.

19. Is there anything that you collect?
Geocoins.

20. Any books, yarns, needles or patterns out there you are dying to get your hands on? What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?
There's a couple, but I'd have to research a bit to find out.

21. Are there any new techniques you'd like to learn?
Entrelac. I know the theory. I just haven't done it yet.

22. Are you a sock knitter? What are your foot measurements?
Yes, but I rarely finish a sock. See (17). Size 8 cdn.

23. When is your birthday? (mm/dd) Late Spring. ;)

24. Are you on Ravelry? If so, what's your ID? nope.

School supplies

(cue music) Its the Most Wonderful Time of the year....

I've loved that commercial for ages.

First time school shopping for DS. He goes to kindergarten. I grabbed several of the kindergarten supply lists for kids at the various schools and I bought what was on all three of the lists - a backpack and a pair of shoes. The other grades were out for his school, but not the kindergarten list. I finally got it about midweek and went and got the one other item I could purchase: A red binder.

Now, really, why red? Why not individualism? There was this funky one for 10$ that was also zippered and wouldn't let anything drop out. Nope. Not what the teacher wanted. So I go to the back of the store and buy two red binders because they came in pairs.

Tada. Done. The "tissue paper" issue will be dealt with later. I plan on buying a pack of 6 later this month and when I do, I'll add that to his supplies.

So, DS, has been having fits over not being able to use his backpack - bought him the 9$ one with lunch box and pencil case (like he'll have much use for those in kindergarten). Not the 20$ "Lightning McQueen" one he wanted. I figure, if he wants some spiderman or other clipons, we'll buy those to individualize his backpack. But a 10$ one is fine for him. He wants to wear it all over the place. He wants to put his shoes on, to pack and unpack and more. So I've hidden it in the closet and gave DP hell when he grabbed it for DS.

Then there's DP's friends and their daughter. She's been homeschooled but, as she put it, Due to an unforseen issue, we need to ask for the following: I am also asking for any school supplies you might have extra for, for Grade 2 entry. Things like paper, Duo-tangs, those small lined books, pencils, sharpener, pencil box, pencil crayons, crayons, and
anything else like that.

Okay... unforseen issue... now, what could that be? Could it be that she wasn't able to get her daughter's grades high enough to continue home schooling? Whatever the reason, I asked if her son was going to go to the same school for kindergarten, after all, DS would be over the moon if they were both there. Nope. She's going to homeschool him too.

So, she's asked for school supplies because she hasn't been sent a list yet. I hop onto the school's webpage and find the list for last year's grade 2s and send it to her. I also offer to buy the supplies because, well, she did give our family a home for two months when we needed it. I just had to check with DP if we could do it.

She never replied. I've just sent her one last email about it asking if she still needs the supplies. I also gave her information on a "school supplies for needy kids" organization in the area.

Well, I think I should just go grab a "generic supply list" for the school for grade 2 and fill it and donate it to the school so that they can give it to "some needy kid" if she isn't going to answer me. We can just afford to buy a full set of school supplies, and would have gladly given then to her kid, but if she's not going to reply to me, then I'll just give it away.

After all, what goes around comes around.

not quite gone

T and I had a detante yesterday and were actually talking. We also helped get rid of more of her crap and even used our car and we got some gas money for it.

What I don't like is that today, her mother asks DP to drive her all the way to Kelowna for a powwow.

I'm like WTFH???? What are we? A private cab? I said no. Simply because there aren't enough seats in the van with seat belts to accomodate everyone safely. She was not amused. I'm not happy either - I would have loved to go to a powwow! (or take a left turn at Kelowna and head to Clinton, but that's another story)

So I've been freecycling T's crap. And I got told off for making the pick up 3pm today from yesterday night. Uh. right. The writter accuses me of only allowing welfare bums and union workers at the item in question. Well, since they were the third person, I blasted them. If the first person doesn't take it, the second one is chomping at the bit for it.

Anyway, he's outside putting the seats and car seats back into our car. I'm going to go get some fabric refresher and give the stuff a quick once over.

Ding Dong

The bitch is gone!

She left yesterday. Last night was the first night where I wasn't on edge worrying about her and whoever she was with waking us up in the middle of the night.

The last bit of fun was... interesting.

First off, On July 20th, T woke us all up at 3 am. She was having yet another meltdown and had been drunk. I didn't even sleep the night before because of her partying. She had been given her eviction notice late June and she was supposed to have been gone well before then. She had asked me earlier in the month if I was could take her out shopping that night. I had partially agreed. Until I found out that the other half had a doctor's appointment in the "Metro" that day, so I talked to her live in boyfriend and told him that I wasn't going to be able to.

Anyway, 3 am, I'm awake. The girls are away. DS is sleeping - how he slept through it... She's having a melt down. DP gets out of bed and tells me that he hasn't had enough sleep to work that day. At one point, he goes out and knocks on her door to find out if everything's okay. It is. Sorta. Her sister is trying to calm her down. Blah blah blah blah. 5am I finally collapse in the bed for a few hours. I get up about 8 am and spend most of the day in a daze because of how little sleep I've had at that point.

Friday night, another party.

Saturday night, yet another one. DS and D2 are having... fun together so I finally tell DP that I'm taking D2 to the movies and go see OoP.

When I get home, I meet up with DP who is just taking a bag of garbage out. That's when things get... interesting.

I find out that T's party went weird. Her "boyfriend", drinking buddy, whatever, had asked DP if he could use our bathroom. And he asked to have a cab called. Finally, after almost an hour of trying to get the guy out of the bathroom and having to apologize to the cabbie, the jerk leaves and the mess is found.

There was feces all over the toilet. He left his underwear. I can't even begin to describe the scene other than if it had been me who found it, T would have been knocked out on her ass. He was HER responsibility not ours. It took most of the rest of the time I was out for DP to clean the toilet and he was just finishing up when I got back.

Less than 20 minutes at home and the live-in showed up wanting to know where their buddy went.

Ever have one of those moments of perfect clarity. Where you lay down the law and the person who is having it laid upon them runs? I went from a small voice to the start of a rant when he fled from my presence. The last phrases was not a threat but a promise: wake me up again and I will call the cops!

From that point on, I was persona non grata around T. She'd snarl at me if I heard something on my way out the door and would offer her what she needed. She yelled at me when one of her boys - the middle one - had dissapeared. I wanted to know which boy it was because at the same time DD was gone and I thought the two of them were together. Nope. I was told to mind my effing business and had the door slammed at me.

I don't think she even knows how many times I saved her butt. How many times I gave her sitters diapers. Or food. Or did "favours" for her. There was twice, maybe three times, that she or her friends "looked" after my kids. Only one of those times was I not doing some sort of favour for her. DP drove her buddies all over the lower mainland, including just last month on a "rescue" mission to get her, on at least 3 different occasions that I can think of. Then there's the sob story she gave one woman who gave me yet another one and I ended up giving up my laundry money so the woman would have gas for her car to get home. Took me two months of hounding both T and her mother to get one of them to finally give it back to me!

Every olive branch since the weekend of the 20th was thrown back in my face. I was called "bitch" and worse by her. Two days before she moved, this was Monday night, there was another dustup in front of her place. "Donny" had his hands around someone's throat and demaning "where's the stuff? Where's my effing stuff?" It took both T and her sister to get "Donny" off of the guy. What did I do? I walked to the garbage bin, threw my garbage out and walked back, watching the entire incident. I got inside and decided I wasn't going to call the cops. I'd let someone else do it unless I saw more of the same when I had to go back out with another load of garbage. I opened the door, saw the live in, spoke to him, and asked him if I was going to be able to sleep that night. I did it in the same type of speech I used when I laid down the law two weeks ago.

DP left that morning and some guy was sleeping on a chair on her porch. She was still "packing" and gave me more 'tude. I offered the use of DP, a former professional mover who has previously shown to T that he can lift and move her TV by himself. She told me to eff off and so I did.

So we took off yesterday to help deal with a bad tenant for a friend of ours. We came back and her eldest, who has a cast, raided two pieces of pizza from my children's plates while we sat on our stoop to eat. I saw her youngest take off to the middle of the parking lot and his sitters, the live in and another guy, did not notice until the child did get to the middle. I saw her put her two older boys - she has three boys total - into a car without car seats and take them away. The eldest is 4.5 and she hasn't even started toilet training him.

And earlier today, I spotted her with at least her eldest in the car and once again, without a car seat.

Right now, I'm dealing with an extreme case of IBS. D2 is asleep in a play pen so I'm going to do a smidge of editing and then head upstairs for a shower after I lock all the doors.
